Publisher's Note by Kevin Morgan
Not much space this month, so I thought I would share this with you...
Here are some statistics for the Year 1907, just 100 years ago. These figures are for the USA, but comparable for many countries in the world I would think.
· The average life expectancy was 47 years · Only 14% of homes had a bath, and only 8% a 'phone.
There were only 8,000 cars and 144 miles of made road. The speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
· The tallest building in the world was the Eiffel Tower!
· The average worker made between $200 - $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year. A dentist $2,500 per year, a Vet. between.
$1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95% of all births took place at home and 90% of all doctors had no college education! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."
· A postage stamp was 1c, Sugar cost 4c a pound, eggs were 14c a dozen, coffee was 15c cents a pound.
· Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
· Canada passed a law that prohibited the poor from entering the country for any reason.
· The 5 leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza, · 2. Tuberculosis, 3. Diarrhoea, 4. Heart disease, 5. Stroke · The American flag had 45 stars.
. The population of Las Vegas was 30!
· Crosswords, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented.
. There was no Mother's or Father's Day.
· 20% of adults were illiterate.
Only 6 percent of Americans finished high school.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were available over the counter at the Pharmacy.
18% of households had at least one fulltime servant.
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE! U.S.A. !
· Now I copied this on my computer from someone else without typing it myself, in a matter of seconds! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.
Happy stamping
